First Place 4 Health
Although weight management is most often the motivation for joining a First Place 4 Health group, the focus is not just on the body. That’s the crucial difference between First Place 4 Health and other weight-loss programs. By applying disciplines that affect the whole person—the body, the mind, the heart and the spirit—you will not only experience physical health but will also experience total health—health for life!
A wide variety of people become members of First Place 4 Health, from those who struggle with losing 5 to 10 pounds to those who battle obesity or are tired of yo-yo dieting. Some may join to increase their knowledge about nutrition, to get help with implementing a consistent exercise plan, or to learn how to develop a healthy lifestyle for their family. ESL (English as a Second Language)
English as a Second Language is a program for non-native English speakers in our community. The goal of this program is to assist non-native English speakers in the very practical need of communicating! The program focuses on conversational English; however, reading and writing in English are also covered. We do our best to match each student’s skill level to one of several levels of classes from beginners to advanced English speakers.
Beginner’s Piano Lessons
Beginner’s Piano Lessons are an opportunity for children and youth to gain a foundational knowledge of playing the piano. Although the lessons are free, students will be expected to purchase music. In addition, they will be required to have regular access to a piano or keyboard for practice. The lessons will culminate in a recital at the end of May. Classes will be taught by members of Calvary Baptist Church who are accomplished musicians.
Your Child: Essentials of Discipline
Your Child: Essentials of Discipline is a 14 week parenting seminar that tackles the difficult and stressful issue of discipline. Topics will include: why your child needs discipline, learning the difference between irresponsibility and defiance, changing discipline as your child grows and disciplining without breaking a child’s spirit.
Each session will include the instruction and insight (via DVD) of parenting experts. There will also be much time devoted to interaction as parents will be encouraged to ask questions about specific issues pertaining to discipline and their family. The classes will also serve as a “support group” for parents who are overwhelmed with the job of parenting. Parenting is tough. Whether you have a house full of teenagers or are just getting started having children, this class will offer very practical help for parents.
First Rate Readers
First Rate Readers is a tutoring program aimed at improving the reading skills of elementary age students. First Rate Readers is a one-on-one tutoring program. Children will work with the same tutor each week throughout the 14 week semester. Depending on the age and reading level of the student, the lessons will include an emphasis on the alphabet, phonics, high-frequency words, fluency and comprehension.
The Book of Acts Bible Study
Riots, jail breaks, shipwrecks, the birth of the church…the book of Acts tells an amazing story about how a small group of Jesus’ followers took His message and changed the world. Come be a part of this exciting Bible study as we journey through the book of Acts.
